Declaration of ‘Spring Offensive’ by the Taliban

The Taliban of Afghanistan declared the beginning of their annual ‘spring offensive’ against the Afghan government on Saturday. They have vowed a series of ‘insider’ attacks within Afghan security forces and suicide bombing of foreign troops, military airbases and embassies.

In a statement sent via email, the group’s leadership promised that ‘every possible tactic will be utilized in order to detain or inflict heavy casualties on the foreign transgressors.’

The group also issued a warning to citizens of the country working for the US-backed government to stay away in order not to be caught up in the attacks. They also warned the youth not to join the army or police.

Named after the legendary 7th Century Muslim commander, Khalid bin Waleed, the new offensive is to show Taliban’s zeal to eliminate the Afghan government and replace it with one that follows strictly Islamic law.

While they celebrated the final withdrawal of NATO forces, saying that ‘the enemy, with all its military might, has been overwhelmed and finally forced to flee from their military bases,’ they add that the offensive, which begins on Sunday, will be ‘in unison throughout the country…against the transgressing invaders and their degenerative backers.’

This battle ahead will be a determinant in the future of Afghanistan such attacks threaten the power of the much-criticized Afghan forces who have to take over the responsibility from international forces.
